KAZAKH DIRECTOR EMIR BAIGAZIN AWARDED WITH THE ANONIMUL TROPHY FOR HIS CONTRIBUTION TO THE BEAUTY OF WORLD CINEMA

Director Emir Baigazin was awarded with the ANONIMUL Trophy for his contribution to the beauty of world cinema Friday, August 10th, within the 15th edition of ANONIMUL International Independent Film Festival.

“I share this award with my team. No director works alone- there is always a team, a technical team and an artistic team. Last but not least, I am honored to be among those awarded with this Trophy along the years”, Emir Baigazin said upon accepting the Trophy offered by Festival Director Miruna Berescu.

Director Emir Baigazin further presented his films to the audience in the Camping- both THE WOUNDED ANGEL, which premiered in Berlin International Film Festival- Panorama, in 2016, and HARMONY LESSONS, awarded with the Silver Bear for an Outstanding Artistic Contribution- Aziz Zhambakiyev for the camera at Berlin International Film Festival in 2013. Harmony Lessons was included that very same year in the Feature Film Competition at ANONIMUL 10 by Festival Selector Ludmila Cvikova.

HARMONY LESSONS and THE WOUNDED ANGEL are the first two parts of a trilogy following adolescents and their complex relationships with the world- the last title in the trilogy, THE RIVER having its world premiere at Venice International Film Festival, in the Orizzonti Competition, just a few weeks after director Emir Baigazin’s presence at ANONIMUL 15.

Director Emir Baigazin further delivered a masterclass Saturday, August 11th in the cinema in the Green Village. The filmmaker spoke of the challenges of working as a director, a producer and an editor, and also about his attention to music and to the visual aesthetic of his films. “I think that the emotions, the feelings transmitted are more important than awards, or festivals attended. A director shouldn’t be, first of all, afraid of making mistakes”, Emir Baigazin noted.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO STARGAZE?, directed and produced by Emir Baigazin will have its world premiere at ANONIMUL Saturday, August 11th. The director will present the film to the audience together with production designer and costume designer Aidana Kozhageldina.
The screening will be followed by the ANONIMUL 15 Closing Gala, announcing the winners of the edition as voted by the audience in Sfântu Gheorghe.

ANONIMUL 15 runs 6th to 12th August in Sfântu Gheorghe, the Danube Delta.

EMIR BAIGAZIN, WINNER OF THE SILVER BEAR FOR AN OUTSTANDING ARTISTIC CONTRIBUTION AT BERLINALE 2013 AND RECENTLY ANNOUNCED IN THE ORIZZONTI COMPETITION AT VENICE 2018, IS THE HONORARY GUEST OF THE 15th ANNIVERSARY EDITION OF ANONIMUL IIFF

Emir Baigazin’s most recent film, THE RIVER, will have its world premiere at Venice International Film Festival in the Orizzonti Competition, just a few weeks after the director’s presence at ANONIMUL 15. The film was announced in the Orizzonti Competition July 25th, within the press conference held by the President of Biennale di Venezia, Paolo Baratta and the Director of the Cinema Department, Alberto Barbera.
Emir Baigazin made his debut with HARMONY LESSONS, which premiered in the Official Competition at Berlin International Film Festival in 2013, where it was awarded The Silver Bear for an Outstanding Artistic Contribution- Aziz Zhambakiyev for the camera. The Silver Bear was awarded by a Jury presided by director Wong Kar-wai the very same year when Călin Peter Netzer’s Poziția copilului won The Golden Bear. HARMONY LESSONS was also included that same year in the ANONIMUL 10 Competition by Festival Selector Ludmila Cvikova and it ranked second in the preferences of the audience voting in Sfântu Gheorghe.
Emir Baigazin then returned at Berlin International Film Festival in 2016 in the Panorama Section with his second film, THE WOUNDED ANGEL, which he wrote, directed and edited.
HARMONY LESSONS, THE WOUNDED ANGEL and THE RIVER were announced since the very beginning as parts of a trilogy following teenagers and their complex relationship with the world. Emir Baigazin considers that adolescence “is the most critical period for a person, when something can snap in the mind and a person gets lost forever. I am interested in whether I can find the stretched string within the teenager that is destined to snap.”

While developing THE RIVER, Emir Baigazin also worked as a director and producer for WOULD YOU LIKE TO STARGAZE?, which will have its world premiere at ANONIMUL 15 Saturday, August 11th.
Aidana Kozhageldina, production designer and costume designer of Would You Like to Stargaze? will join director Emir Baigazin at the Festival.
Emir Baigazin will also be awarded with the ANONIMUL Trophy for his contribution to the beauty of world cinema. WOULD YOU LIKE TO STARGAZE?, THE WOUNDED ANGEL and HARMONY LESSONS are the 3 titles presented to the audience, and the screenings will be followed by Q&A sessions. Emir Baigazin will also deliver a masterclass at the Festival Saturday, August 11th.

“We are dedicating this edition of the Festival to an extraordinary filmmaker whom we discovered ever since his debut 5 years ago, following his work over the years, to now be able to award him with the ANONIMUL Trophy for his contribution to the beauty of world cinema. Emir Baigazin is a young filmmaker who has told us so much with his films, who has offered us and the audience so much, and who will certainly keep drawing us in his very special, inspiring and provocative universe”, concludes Festival Director, Miruna Berescu.

ANONIMUL 15 will run 6th to 12th August in Sfântu Gheorghe, the Danube Delta.

The 6 titles are vying for the ANONIMUL Trophy, awarded by the audience voting in Sfântu Gheorghe.

More than 400 short films from 46 countries were submitted for the ANONIMUL 15 International and Romanian Short Film Competition. The films are selected by film critic Ionuț Mareș.

“Diversity, geographical and cultural here included, is important, especially as cinema offers access to other worlds than those we are accustomed to. But that does not mean that we have, in any way, made a rebate of quality in favor of diversity. Quite the opposite: the unexpected and mixed origins of the films came naturally, but only after the most important criteria, which must always be the quality of the cinematic discourse (originality + boldness). I hope that you will be surprised by each and every one of the 14 international titles. The Romanian Short Film Competition includes 12 films. It is a selection of films from well-known directors (of short or even feature films) and young and very young cineastes who are just now starting out. A new tendency, also reflected in this selection, seems to be the wish of some actors to dive themselves (also) in directing. And they do so in a very promising manner.” says Ionuț Mareș.
